Inspirations: Simple and Complex
The title of this exhibition examines 2 areas: the exploration of shadow and light in organic forms to the bold imagery of transfigured pop art. From the glossy reflection of cropped innocence to the crisp 2D print-like graphics, both are vastly different but make an equally powerful statement. That is what I love about art.
“Inspirations” is also based on my interest in art and culture. As a teacher, I am constantly educating myself about current contemporary artists and social concerns. Whether simple or complex, stories can be told through a work of art that not only gives us a brief glimpse into another way of thinking but empowering us as well. When discussing paintings I often ask my students “What do you see that makes you say that?” That question causes the viewer to take a second look and formulate ideas about what they are seeing and encourage higher level thinking. The students validate the art by giving it meaning from their personal perspective. The story expressed is different for every individual. So hopefully I can encourage viewers of my work to ask themselves, “What do you see that makes you day that?”
